This year’s Castle Hill Woman of the Year is popular Chinese community leader Jenny Lau, Member for Castle Hill Michael Richardson announced today.
“Jenny has been a powerhouse within the Cherrybrook Chinese Community Association for more than a decade, and making a real difference to people’s lives in Cherrybook,” Mr Richardson said.
“She was president of the CCCA for four years from 2005-09 and is currently vice-president.
“During her presidency the new room for the CCCA was built at Cherrybrook Community Centre. There was a lot of concern about the cost of this project and it took a strong leader to steer it through.
“The new room is already proving to be an enormous asset to the association in the years to come.
“The CCCA continues its good work with resettlement programs for new migrants, the Saturday morning Chinese language classes, its social and sporting functions, activities for seniors, and the Cherrybrook Chinese Lantern Festival which brings together Australians from all backgrounds.
“The association is one of the premier ethnic organisations in Australia – there are few that can approach the quality and depth of its activities – and this award recognises that fact.”
Mr Richardson said Jenny had also started an annual concert for young people which gives them a chance to demonstrate their musical talents to a wider audience.
“She’s a pocket dynamo who through her hard work and energy has made the Hills a better place to live,” he said.
Mr Richardson presented Mrs Lau with a framed certificate at the CCCA Chinese New Year celebration in Eastwood on February 21.
Mrs Lau will also be attending a special function at Parliament House on March 8 to honour the nominees from the State’s 93 electorates.
